ASHLAND — The New London boys golf team was narrowly denied the Firelands Conference championship on Sept. 18 at Brookside golf course.
Host Crestview totaled a 333, which was just two strokes better than New London’s 335. Entering the tournament, the Cougars and Wildcats were tied in the points standings. That meant Thursday’s two-stroke win also gave Crestview the overall championship.
Mapleton was third with a 339, followed by St. Paul (385), Western Reserve (404) and Plymouth (405).
Brody Sword was second overall with a 38-38—76 for New London, putting him on the All-FC first team. The overall medalist was Crestview’s No. 2 golfer, Cale Bowman, with a 75.
Also for New London, Logan Sword totaled a 45-39—84, which was good for eighth overall and second team FC.
Kade Detterman (47-40—87), Grady Heileman (40-48—88), Presley Ferguson (46-40—90) and Olivia Yetter (60-54—114) rounded out the lineup for the Wildcats. Heileman earned honorable mention FC honors.
For St. Paul, freshman Mason Beatty’s 79 was the third best score behind Bowman and Sword, and was also good for All-FC first team honors. He shot a 39 on the front nine and 40 on the back nine.
Sophomore Connor Polachek (45-42—87) was honorable mention FC for the Flyers. Sophomore Tristan Schlachter (54-50—100), sophomore Jacob Penwell (56-59—115) and senior Everett Beal (57-60—117) rounded out the St. Paul lineup.
For Western Reserve, Chase Hipp had a 44-55 for a 99 score. His teammate, Landon Barnhart, totaled a 52-47 to match Hipp for the team lead.
Eliza Stewart (53-50—103) and Caleb Pausch (50-53—103) also had identical scores for the Roughriders. Ben Woodrum (55-56—111) and Reed Meggit (58-62—120) finished off the Western lineup.
